We are best known for creating the parkwifi network.
The Parkwifi Network
In Oct 2004, Wi-Fi Salon was awarded a concession to run
a free Wi-Fi network in 17 locations in 10 NYC parks in 4 boroughs from The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. For the past three years, we have been bringing free Wi-Fi to 10 NYC flagship parks in 17 locations with the
parkwifi network. We have seven
locations in Central Park, Washington Square Park, Union Square Park, The
Battery, Riverside, Prospect (two locations), Van Cortlandt, Orchard Beach,
Pelham Bay Park, and Corona-Flushing Meadows.
In June 2005, Wi-Fi Salon launched its parkwifi network by
lighting up the first of its locations at The Battery, at the southern
tip of Manhattan. Click on image to go to live portal:
The Battery Wi-Fi hot spot played host to a Sony LocationFreeTV™ promotion and a Sony PSP™ tournament.
In June 2006, Nokia was selected to sponsor the parkwifi network. An additional 16 NYC park locations in were added during the summer and fall.
In 2007, Wi-Fi Salon provided Wi-Fi for Nokia product launch events in Washington Square Park, Union Square Park, and Columbus Circle.
In April 2007, we brought local community portals to all 17 of our Hot Spots (see below) so that park goers could have a local map and local information as they visit the parks either on the parkwifi network or on the web.
For 2008, Wi-Fi Salon is seeking ways to bring Web 2.0
experiences to local park goers - local information, social computing. We are also starting to deploy Altai antennas
where there is high usage, for example in Washington Square.
